My interest in sociology comes from the work I am currently involved in. I work with kids with developmental disabilities and a huge part of what I do is about getting my clients involved in social activities. A lot of what I do involves understanding people and how society works. I am a psychology major and I have been taking sociology classes as well. My next step is to go to Graduate School for Social Work and I am hoping to do a lot more integrating different minorities into our society.
For my image I found an image that I thought was really cool. To me it symbolizes how connected we all are, all different ethnic groups, ages and sizes and I love that it forms a heart which is something we should all strive to give and receive.
I haven't had a lot of first hand experience in dealing with abuse. I had friends that have been in abusive relationships so that is the closest I have come to it. I am a mandated reporter with my job and this class has already made me much more aware of the bruises I see on my kids and they way their families work. I think this class is going to be incredibly beneficial to me and hopefully to everyone else in this class. It's something very important and sadly prevalent so we all need to be aware and prepared.
I'm using Miranda Lambert's song "Gunpowder and Lead." The video (2010) is accompanied by the lyrics (2007) below. I immediately thought of it because she's my favorite artist but I also like it because she retaliates, not necessarily in the best way, but I do like that it shows how strong and brave victims can be and how long and powerful the effect of abuse can have over a victim.
Gunpowder and Lead
County road 233, under my feet
Nothin' on this white rock but little ole me
I've got two miles till, he makes bail
And if I'm right we're headed straight for hell
[Chorus:]
I'm goin' home, gonna load my shotgun
Wait by the door and light a cigarette
If he wants a fight well now he's got one
And he ain't seen me crazy yet
He slap my face and he shook me like a rag doll
Don't that sound like a real man
I'm going to show him what a little girls made of
Gunpowder and lead
It's half past ten, another six pack in
And I can feel the rumble like a cold black wind
He pulls in the drive, the gravel flies
He dont know what's waiting here this time
I'm goin' home, gonna load my shotgun
Wait by the door and light a cigarette
If he wants a fight well now he's got one
And he ain't seen me crazy yet
He slap my face and he shook me like a rag doll
Don't that sound like a real man
I'm going to show him what a little girls made of
Gunpowder and lead
His fist is big but my gun's bigger
He'll find out when I pull the trigger
I'm goin' home, gonna load my shotgun
Wait by the door and light a cigarette
If he wants a fight well now he's got one
And he ain't seen me crazy yet
He slap my face and he shook me like a rag doll
Don't that sound like a real man
I'm going to show him what a little girls made of
Gunpowder and lead
